Being in college while managing a leadership position in your sorority is super exciting! However, you need to prioritize yourself and self-care to avoid burnout and fatigue. Dedicating time to yourself is important to ensure you show up as your best self. Here are the items that fall under my weekly self-care routine.

Create a Self-Care Routine During Your Sorority Officer Term
MORNING MINDFULNESS RITUAL
Start each day on the right foot with a few minutes of mindfulness or meditation. A quiet morning routine can help ground you, clear your mind, and set a positive tone for the day. I typically find a quick guided session on YouTube to complete or will take three minutes where I concentrate on my breathing.
Daily Digital Detox Sessions
On my calendar, I block a couple of hours to be removed entirely from my leadership responsibilities. Being on call is exhausting, especially when you feel pressured to respond to everyone and everything in minutes. I avoid social media, my email, and any notifications during this block and use this time to relax and unwind. I’m not entirely off the grid. If it’s an emergency, sisters will call me.
Prioritized Exercise Routine
During the day, especially with my major, I am extremely stationary. For my sake, I need to move. As an outlet, I attend some workout classes hosted for free at my university’s rec center. I get my movement in; I release any stress; as a bonus, I attend workout classes with my sisters. It’s a win-win.
Dedicated “Me Time”
Each week, block out an hour or two for time to yourself and things you enjoy. I enjoy binge-watching Netflix, drinking my beverage at a coffee shop with a good book, and an occasional nap. You better believe I stick to my weekly “Me Time,” and I’m always in a much better mood afterward. Give it a go!
Staying Hydrated and Eating Better
With parties, socials, and prioritizing coffee, I’m guilty of skipping meals and forgetting to drink water. To conquer this, I have a veggie tray in my fridge for quick snacks throughout the day. A non-negotiable for me is bringing my water bottle to events. I don’t leave home without it. Chances are, if I have water easily accessible, I’m more likely to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Nightly Journaling and Gratitude Practice
Each night, I write down three things I’m grateful for. When things are hard, I remember I only have this leadership position for a year. I try to make the most of the opportunity and know it’s not forever. If it’s a particularly good day, I’ll also write down things I’m proud of or accomplished.
Monthly Mental Health Check-Ins
Remember to lean on your team, advisor, and others for support. At the end of each month, take some time to reflect on your stress levels and overall well-being. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to reach out and ask for support!
Good luck!
Being a good leader means taking care of yourself so you can support others effectively. Make it a goal to implement some of these self-care practices into your schedule.
Cheers,
Lydia
